How Jardiance works in the kidneys
Jardiance is known as a diabetes medication—but lowering blood sugar is only part of its story.
Jardiance (empagliflozin) is an SGLT2 inhibitor. It works through the kidneys, allowing more glucose to remain in the urine instead of being reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.
But research revealed benefits that went beyond glucose control.
Jardiance is now used in appropriate patients with heart failure and chronic kidney disease, and some patients may receive it even when diabetes isn't the primary reason for treatment.
That's what makes the Jardiance story so interesting: a medication known for getting glucose out through the kidneys also became important for heart and kidney protection.
