How Jardiance removes sugar through urine

Jardiance (empagliflozin) works in a surprisingly different way from many diabetes medications—it changes how your kidneys handle glucose.

Your kidneys normally filter glucose and then reclaim most of it back into your bloodstream. Jardiance is an SGLT2 inhibitor, which blocks part of that glucose reabsorption process.

The result? More glucose stays in the urine and leaves your body when you go to the bathroom.

That's one of the key ways Jardiance helps lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.
