GLP-1s and heart disease: what to know
What’s the connection between GLP-1 medications, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease?
Research suggests GLP-1-based medications may reduce certain markers of systemic inflammation—particularly C-reactive protein (CRP). That’s especially interesting because chronic inflammation is involved in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.
In this Short, I explain why researchers are studying whether changes in inflammation could be one piece of the cardiovascular benefit seen with certain GLP-1 therapies.
The important distinction: GLP-1s are not anti-inflammatory medications, and lower CRP does not prove that reducing inflammation is responsible for their cardiovascular benefits. Weight loss, blood pressure, glucose control, and other metabolic changes may all contribute.
